Gateway Green Hosts 130+ Volunteers for Big Dig event

Dirt Lab grand opening celebration scheduled for June 24th

On February 11, 2017, more than 130 volunteers joined Friends of Gateway Green and Northwest Trail Alliance for the first Big Dig event at the Dirt Lab. The full day event allowed for significant progress at the park.Volunteers collected more than 30 large bags of trash, pulled more than 10,000 square feet of ivy and liberated more than a dozen trees from ivy overgrowth. Volunteers also made important advances on the singletrack trails, including adding technical features.

The volunteers’ hard work was fueled by food, beverages, and raffle prizes that were generously donated by our sponsors: NWTA, Metro, Portland Parks and Recreation, Lumberyard, R.E.I., Fat Tire Farm, Portland Design Works, KEEN, Starbucks, Frito Lay, St. Honoré Bakery, and Clif Bar. The event was a huge success in every way; building community and enjoying the amazing weather while doing our part to make this park a reality!

As we progress toward the formal opening of the park, Friends of Gateway Green is looking to build volunteer capacity to help make it happen. A wide range of skills and areas of expertise is needed – if you’re interested in offering your time and energy, please visit gatewaygreenpdx.org/get-involved/volunteer to submit a Volunteer Interest Form. Thank you!
